Our tongue is the smallest part of the body but it can also be the deadliest because the words that come out of it can either bring blessing or curse, joy or sorrow, encouragement or desperation, praise or insult, life or death.
Realizing this, one of the things that we must guard and try to control are the words that we utter. Where words are many, sin is not wanting; but he who restrains his lips does well (Proverbs 10:19). To keep silent is nobler than to speak if we will only utter lies and harsh words that will crush the spirit of a person. The ability to keep silent, if the situation requires, is really a big challenge! Whoever loves life must keep the tongue from evil and the lips from speaking deceit and words that sow division, discord, and depression among other people. The lesser we talk, the lesser is the chance to commit mistakes and sin.
Another important part of speech is the tone and manner of how we deliver and utter what we have to say. Along with choosing the right words, how we deliver these words are also equally relevant to watch out. Speaking gently, humbly, and in moderate and right tone can put off anger and conquer pride while shouting, being combative and wild will bring disagreement, division, and conflict.
Finally, right timing should also be considered when we want to speak our minds. There must be a right balance between remaining to be silent when our advice is uncalled for and having the boldness to speak the truth at the right place and at the right time.
If we are able to control the words as well as the manner and timing of our speech, then we can truly say that we have gainfully matured as an individual.
